Living with Eternity in Focus

Scripture: Philippians 3:20

“But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.” — Paul

Our hopes and expectations shape our attitudes toward life. Many people see nothing beyond their earthly existence and therefore invest all their energy in the things of this world.

Paul warns that many live as “enemies of the cross of Christ” because their minds are set on earthly things (Philippians 3:18–19).

The world is in spiritual decline because many Christians live as though this world were their permanent home. We forget that, as believers, we are citizens of heaven and temporary residents on earth.

The Gospel becomes difficult to live out and proclaim when the things of this world consume our hearts. But when our minds are renewed and eternity becomes our focus, our priorities, values, and choices begin to change.

We are not here permanently; we are on our way to our eternal home in heaven. We must, therefore, guard our hearts against becoming so attached to earthly treasures that they hinder our spiritual journey. This was the resolve of Paul, who declared:

“But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in Him… that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.” — Philippians 3:7–11 (NKJV, excerpted)

Paul understood that knowing Christ and pursuing the eternal reward were far more valuable than any earthly gain.

Prayer: Lord, help me to live each day with eternity in focus. May my life, priorities, choices, and witness reflect the truth that my citizenship is in heaven. Keep my heart from being consumed by earthly treasures, and help me to pursue what has eternal value. In Jesus Christ’s name, Amen. 🙏
